Summer vacations: Think about taking a real break

© 2025 EPFL
As summer is already making its presence felt, this is the perfect time to slow down, breathe, and enjoy life’s pleasures outside of work. It’s worth noting that this necessary rest applies to PhD assistants and postdocs too.
We encourage you to make taking time off a priority, just like your other commitments—because well-being starts with balance.
Here are a few useful reminders:
Accrued vacation days must be taken during the calendar year: 5 weeks per year (6 weeks for those under 20 or over 50).
Swiss law requires at least two consecutive weeks of leave per year.
Steps to take:
- Every planned or unplanned absence must be recorded in the absences system: absences.epfl.ch
If you have vacation days remaining, plan them now with your supervisor and enter them into the absences system. To do so, please consult the Employee and Manager Holiday Guidelines.
Why it matters:
- Respecting rest periods, particularly vacations, is essential for safeguarding the health and safety of all staff members.
- Planning in advance also allows for better team organization.
